Mikaela & Henry - Aug '24

Henry and Mikaela have been waiting to celebrate their marriage since 2021 so their big day was long anticipated by all.

Mikaela is Australian and she and Henry have a love of the outdoors which they wanted to incorporate into their wedding day. Living in a somewhat unpredictable climate (!), couples will often shy away from planning elements of the wedding to take place in the open air. Our advice would be: if it is what you would love then be brave and go for it, just take into account a few considerations, and your day could be as beautifully outdoorsy as Henry and Mikaela’s.

Of course, the biggest enemy to your outdoor celebrations is the weather in one form or another. We all know that the great British weather is full of surprises so it’s important to prepare for all eventualities. If you are planning for a time of year that should offer some sunshine then it’s good to focus on the details of being outside while having your Coordinator on hand to figure out the logistics of a back up plan to bring sections of the day inside if the weather is not on side.

Location will be important. Mikaela and Henry chose to get married on the parkland underneath the ancient oak tree. They chose simple wooden benches for guests to sit on and decorated the aisle with huge floor meadows. The green backdrop of the trees was in perfect contrast to the pale pink, deep red and cherry black coloured florals from the super talented Charlotte Staff Flowers.

The couple were lucky enough to have a warm but breezy day. If you would like guests to enjoy the outside space then it’s worth checking the forecast a few days before to see whether you would like to invest in paper fans, water bottles, umbrellas or blankets to encourage people to make the most of the outdoors.

It’s also worth considering how your outfits might be impacted by being outside. For example, you may decide that you will forego a veil in case of a breeze or perhaps that you would like a very long veil as you love the idea of it being caught in the wind. You may also want to think about the surface that you will be walking over as it may affect the shoes that you choose to wear. Or maybe you would prefer a tea length dress?

A conversation with your hair and makeup artists will help you to understand how you can expect certain hair and makeup styles to perform in hot or windy weather too. They will be able to make suggestions based on your plans to help you feel at your best all day.

Mikaela and Henry also held their speeches outside on the lawn followed by their wedding breakfast. They opted for a giant grazing table of slow cooked meats and accompaniments. A beautifully colourful option that allowed guests to fill their own plates and relax on casual seating which really played into the general feel of the day.

Mr and Mrs Birt achieved a really beautiful day spent mostly outdoors until they hit the dancefloor in the evening and partied hard! We would encourage you to take inspiration from them and consider giving even one element of the day the backdrop of the gorgeous Norfolk countryside.
